Artist: Martine Carrière

Photo of Martine CarrièrePiano, singing and composition are some of Martine Carrière’s musical passions. After extensive classical training, she studied jazz piano, musical composition, classical singing and jazz. She is renowned among musical afficionados as an artist of integrity and great talent, with a deep knowledge of music, a unique voice, excellent technique and a very personal style, in her compositions as well as her interpretation. Her primary jazz influences are all pianists: Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, etc. Her vocal inspirations include Betty Carter, Billy Holliday, Sheila Jordan and Shirley Horne. Passionate, intense and charismatic, from the very beginning, Martine selected voice as her form of music, using it much as a wind instrument. Her musical interpretations are emotional, transparent and improvisational, and reveal extensive research. In the mid-eighties, she drew on her wide musical training to perform her original compositions as well as her own arrangements of jazz standards. Daniel Lessard, Ron Séguin, Frédérique Alarie, Jean Beaudet, Paul Léger, Dave Robbins, André White, Jean-François Groulx and Mathieu Bélanger are among the talented musicians with whom she worked in concerts and on TV and radio. During the nineties, Ms. Carrière performed a few concerts at Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, sang in private venues, and several of her compositions were performed by Montreal musicians.
