Photo of Dave TurnerA native of Montreal, alto saxophonist/composer Dave Turner has been a mainstay of that city’s jazz scene since the mid 1970’s. During this time he has performed and has been a featured performer at every major jazz festival in Canada, as well as such prominent clubs as Top of The Senator (Toronto), Sweet Basil (New-York), Le Lion S’Envoile (Liege) and L’Archiduc (Brussels). Dave Turner has been a featured soloist and lead alto with the Vic Vogel Big Band since 1979 and also filled the same role with the European Broadcast Union Orchestra in 1999 in live concerts and a recording celebrating the centennial of the birth of Duke Ellington. In the same year he was a guest soloist with the National Arts Center Orchestra in another dedication to Duke at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival.

Dave Turner has recorded nine CDs, all of which have received wide critical acclaim across Canada, in the USA and in Europe where he has performed frequently. His CD Café Alto was nominated for a Juno Award in 1987.

In 1996, Dave Turner was honoured as Alto Saxophonist of the year by Jazz Report magazine. In 1995 he was recipient of a teaching Excellence Award from Concordia University in Montreal for his work in the Jazz Studies program, with which he has been involved as a faculty member since 1982.

Since 2000, Dave Turner has performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival with Vic Vogel and Freddie Hubbard (2001), at l’Off Festival de Jazz (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005), the Ottawa International Jazz Festival (2004); with Phil Dwyer’s Saxphone Summit at the Rex (Toronto) and the Belleville Jazz Festival; he has performed as a solo saxophonist for the CBC Radio special Urban Tales (2003); he has toured Quebec and New-Brunswick with Offenback en Fusion; performed several times with legendary guitarist Nelson Symonds, he has recorded and performed with Johanne Blouin and Vic Vogel and has been a featured soloist on a recent recording and performances with the Jubilation Gospel Choir.

In 2006, Dave Turner presents his new CD in quintet Earth Tones with Vanessa Rodrigues on Hammond B3, David Grott on trombone, Kenny Bibace on guitar, Jim Hillman on drums and Dave Turner on baritone saxophone.
